Food Truck Fridays: The Story Behind Walnut Creek Food Truck Plaza

Food Truck Fridays: Halloween Block Party and Artisan Market!

A Little Background

Let me tell you how Walnut Creek’s beloved Food Truck Fridays came to be! It all started in 2023, during Walnut Creek’s Community Service Day. A few dedicated members of Sustainable Walnut Creek (SWC) — Diego Dotta, Uli Wolf, and Bob Joe — were busy picking up trail debris and painting over graffiti along the Iron Horse Trail near the San Miguel Center.

While working, they noticed a huge, empty parking lot next to the trail. And like all good ideas, it started with a simple question: “Why couldn’t that space be used for something fun and useful?”

Initially, thoughts of affordable housing crossed their minds, but after some digging, they discovered a proposed 90-unit housing development had been shelved. That's when the vision of something entirely different started to take shape.

Flash forward to Earth Day 2024. Diego and Bob took a break from Walnut Creek's Earth Day event at Civic Park, sharing a delicious plate from the Curry & Gumbo food truck. As they enjoyed the food, the idea clicked. Why not turn that vacant parking lot into a food truck plaza that could bring the community together with unique, affordable eats?

The rest, as they say, is history. Bob reached out to Sunny Pannu, the owner of Curry & Gumbo, and once Sunny saw the lot, he was all in. With the enthusiastic support of local businesses, banners went up, plans were made, and the grand opening was September 13, 2024.
